Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), described as the ruling party, has collected two nomination forms for the presidential election from the Election Commission’s returning officer’s office. Parliamentary Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi collected the forms on Sunday morning from the chief election officer’s office at the Election Building in Agargaon, Dhaka.

According to Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, August 13 has been set as the deadline for submitting nomination papers under the election schedule. Voting for the presidential election is scheduled to take place on August 20.

On the night of August 1, BNP’s standing committee assigned party chief and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman responsibility for selecting the party’s candidate for president. Several senior BNP leaders are under discussion for the post. There is strong discussion about Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir taking the role, while standing committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Dr Moin Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan are also being discussed in various circles.
