Border Guard Bangladesh detained alleged gold smuggler Mohammad Robiul Islam, 32, with nearly seven kilograms of gold near the Darshana border in Chuadanga. The operation was conducted by Chuadanga Battalion-6 on Saturday afternoon following a tip-off. BGB estimated the market value of the seized gold at Tk 13 crore 32 lakh 63 thousand.

A patrol team took position near border pillar 78 after receiving information that gold might be smuggled into India through the Parkestpur border area of Darshana upazila. At about 4:30pm, BGB personnel stopped and searched a suspect travelling on a motorcycle. They recovered 39 pieces of gold of different sizes, weighing six kilograms and 968 grams.

Robiul Islam is the son of Ahmad Ali Biswas of Chhoygharia village in Damurhuda upazila. During preliminary questioning, he admitted that he was carrying the gold for smuggling into India, according to BGB. Personnel also seized a motorcycle, a button mobile phone and Tk 140 in cash. BGB said the accused and motorcycle would be handed over to Darshana police station, while the gold would be deposited at the Chuadanga Treasury Office.
