A toxic gas explosion at Ferdous Steel Ship Recycling Industries in Bhatiari, Sitakunda, Chattogram, killed workers and injured several others, according to the report published on August 16, 2026. The incident reportedly occurred during hazardous cutting work on a scrap ship without required chemical testing and a gas-free certificate. The report said the explosion involved accumulated toxic gas and cast a shadow of grief across the industrial area.

BNP central leader Professor Aslam Chowdhury FCA attended funeral prayers for dead workers, visited bereaved families and checked on injured workers in hospital. With insufficient lighting, local residents and relatives reportedly used mobile-phone flashlights during the funeral prayers. Chowdhury offered condolences, promised support to the families and urged doctors to provide close care to workers affected by toxic gas poisoning.

At about 11 pm, Chowdhury visited the Ferdous Steel yard and said he observed security shortcomings and a lack of protective equipment. He demanded an impartial legal investigation, punishment for those responsible and full compensation for affected families. Local people also alleged that senior leaders of the Bangladesh Ship Breakers and Recycling Association, including president Mohsin Chowdhury, were not seen at families' homes, hospitals or the accident site.
