Sylhet Metropolitan Jamaat condemned an attack on an NCP march in Habiganj and an alleged attack and vandalism at Jamaat lawmaker Golam Rasul’s home in Jessore. In a statement issued on July 29, the party’s leaders demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the two separate incidents. The statement was signed by central working council member and Sylhet city ameer Muhammad Fakhrul Islam, deputy ameer Dr Nurul Islam Babul, and secretary Mohammad Shahjahan Ali.

The leaders said Chhatra Dal activists carried out a “brutal” attack on an NCP peaceful march in Habiganj on Tuesday afternoon. They alleged that BNP and Chhatra Dal had not learned from the fall of the Awami League and were following the path of the banned Chhatra League by attacking NCP leaders. They said such actions would have adverse consequences.

The statement also alleged that local Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal activists attacked and vandalised Golam Rasul’s residence in Jessore around 11am on Tuesday. Jamaat leaders said the incident concerned the conduct of the lawmaker’s mentally ill daughter and described the matter as already resolved. They alleged an attempt to use the issue to discredit Jamaat and said a collective resistance could be formed if necessary.
