National Labour Force staged a protest and human chain at the base of the July Memorial Monument in Shahbagh, Dhaka, on August 15, over the deaths of 14 workers at the Ferdous LNG shipbreaking yard in Sitakunda, Chattogram. The group is an affiliate of the National Citizen Party.
The demonstrators issued three demands: compensation for workers killed at the Ferdous Steel Ship Breaking Yard, an investigation into the incident, and justice. They also called for safe working conditions to be restored in factories and for overtime work to be stopped.
Convenor Mazharul Islam Fakir demanded the arrest and trial of the factory owner. Joint convenor Ahmed Ishak said justice must be established with workers, while labour leader Wafi questioned reported government messaging on compensation of Tk10 lakh. Rezaul Islam moderated the human chain, where Toufiq Uz Zaman Piracha, Mamun Chakladar and farmer leader Mahi Palash also spoke or offered solidarity, alongside other attendees.
