Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has said that the killing of BNP-affiliated volunteer leader Azizur Rahman Mushabbir in the capital’s Tejaturi Bazaar stemmed from disputes over territorial control and extortion. DB Chief Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam disclosed the findings at a media briefing on Saturday, noting that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full motive. Police have arrested five suspects so far, including alleged shooter Md Rahim, who was detained in Narsingdi’s Madhabdi area on January 23 with two foreign pistols, two magazines, and 12 rounds of ammunition. A separate case under the Arms Act has been filed against him.

Mushabbir, former general secretary of BNP’s Dhaka North Volunteer Wing, was shot dead on January 7 near Hotel Super Star in West Tejaturi Para. His wife filed a murder case against several unidentified suspects at Tejgaon Police Station. The DB has also intensified operations to recover illegal firearms ahead of the upcoming 13th general election and referendum, arresting two more individuals with weapons in Jatrabari.

Police said the drive to seize illegal arms and apprehend fugitives will continue.
