Following the ceasefire agreement signed last month at France’s Versailles Palace between US President Donald Trump and Iran, analysts say a new geopolitical reality is emerging in the Middle East. The death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli strike ended decades of leadership, bringing his 56-year-old successor Mojtaba Khamenei and a younger generation of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps–aligned leaders to power.

Experts note that Iran, once seen as weakened by sanctions and regional setbacks, managed to maintain its position through military resilience, prompting Gulf states to reconsider reliance on US security guarantees. The new leadership is prioritizing state survival over ideology, engaging in talks with Washington while maintaining a firm stance. Domestically, modest social relaxations—such as easing hijab enforcement and limited alcohol tolerance—suggest efforts to rebuild public trust.

The ceasefire has led to temporary sanctions relief, allowing Iran to export oil for 60 days and raising prospects for asset unfreezing and reconstruction funding. However, uncertainties remain over financing and whether the fragile peace will hold amid unresolved nuclear and regional tensions.
