The United States fired 50 Patriot interceptor missiles worth about $4 million in a single day to counter Iranian missile and drone attacks in Jordan, according to a New York Times report cited by Iranian Broadcasting Corporation. Despite the extensive use of air-defense missiles, Iranian missiles were able to evade US air-defense systems. The report was published on August 12, 2026.

Iran carried out major attacks on three bases used by US forces in Jordan over five days, the report said. Repeated drone and missile launches put substantial pressure on US air defenses. Iran reportedly used advanced missiles capable of abruptly changing course midair, requiring US forces to deploy large numbers of Patriot interceptors.

On the fifth day of attacks, July 17, an Iranian missile penetrated US defenses and struck a US base, killing three American service members and injuring more than 100. Pentagon officials later said dozens more personnel were injured during that week's attacks and several aircraft were damaged. The New York Times said Iran's changing tactics are rapidly depleting US interceptor stocks and increasing pressure on US air-defense capability.
