Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) has inaugurated an advanced C-arm fluoroscopy imaging machine to strengthen orthopedic surgery services. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr AFM Siddiqui opened the new technology at a modest ceremony on Tuesday on the 10th floor of the university’s Cabin Block. The machine enables surgeons to view real-time, live X-ray images of patients’ bones during operations, according to university authorities.

BMU said the technology will help make complex bone surgeries safer, more precise and more effective. Professor Dr Sheikh Farhad, the university’s proctor and an orthopedic surgery department professor, said surgeons can directly monitor fractured bone positions and surgical progress, allowing immediate confirmation that screws, plates, rods, implants and K-wires are correctly placed.

The C-arm system also supports minimally invasive procedures, potentially allowing treatment of complex fractures through small openings rather than larger incisions. BMU officials said live imaging can support faster, more specific surgical decisions, reduce operation time, unnecessary tissue damage, bleeding and infection risks, and improve prospects for faster recovery. Department Chairman Professor Dr Md Anwarul Islam said the new digital C-arm uses a comparatively lower radiation dose, offering greater safety for patients and operating-theatre staff.
