A Dhaka court has granted three days’ remand for questioning of former Gazipur-5 member of parliament Akhtaruzzaman, who was arrested in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act filed by Tejgaon Industrial Area police. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam issued the order on Monday afternoon, August 10. Prosecution department Sub-Inspector Arif Reza confirmed the matter.

Last Thursday, the investigating officer, Tejgaon zonal team Inspector Md Masudur Rahman, produced Akhtaruzzaman before the court and sought seven days’ remand. As the hearing was not held that day, he was sent to jail and Monday was set for the remand hearing. He was brought to court under police guard on Monday afternoon.

The remand petition said preliminary questioning had produced evidence of the accused’s involvement in the incident. It cited the need to identify and arrest absconding associates, gather information on their alleged anti-state illegal plans, and determine the source of illegal cocktail bombs in custody. Akhtaruzzaman’s lawyers sought cancellation of remand and bail, while state lawyer Omar Faruk Faruqui argued in favour of remand.
