Violence broke out in central Buenos Aires after Argentina lost 1–0 to Spain in extra time of the World Cup final. Thousands of fans had gathered near the Obelisk, where celebrations turned into clashes with police as some supporters tried to breach security barriers. Law enforcement used tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannons to disperse the crowd. Several people, including police officers, were injured, and at least 15 individuals were detained.

Local emergency service SAME confirmed that a 67-year-old fan suffered a fatal heart attack during the match despite attempts to revive him. After the confrontation, broken glass, bottles, and debris littered the Obelisk and 9 de Julio Avenue areas. Police regained control after several minutes and gradually cleared the site.

The defeat left Argentine supporters visibly disheartened. While most fans returned home peacefully, a small group’s violent actions overshadowed the otherwise emotional show of support for the national team.
