A Bangladeshi youth, Tara Mia, 20, was killed in firing by India’s Border Security Force near the Alinagar border in Kulaura, Moulvibazar, according to Border Guard Bangladesh. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Sunday in Maguruli, Tripura, across pillar 1845, 63 S. Tara Mia was the son of Abdul Malek from the Muraichhara Basti area of Kulaura.

BGB said Tara Mia was among a group of four or five people who crossed into India through the Alinagar border to bring in Indian Nasiruddin leaf cigarettes, which are prohibited for import. The group had gone about 500 yards inside the border area when members of the Maguruli camp of the 199 Battalion BSF opened fire. Tara Mia died at the scene, BGB said.

Other members of the group fled back into Bangladesh and are in hiding, according to BGB. BGB also said Tara Mia had cases filed against him at Kulaura police station. Lieutenant Colonel Sarkar Asif Mahmud, commander of Srimangal 46 Battalion, said the BSF had taken the body and BGB was holding discussions with the BSF on the matter.
