National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md. Abdur Rahman Khan has announced that submitting income tax returns online is now mandatory. The government has taken this step to digitize and streamline the tax filing process. However, four categories of taxpayers are exempted from this requirement: expatriate Bangladeshis, individuals aged 65 and above, persons with disabilities (with medical certification), and legal representatives of deceased taxpayers. These groups may still file online voluntarily. Khan added that if any taxpayer faces technical difficulties while using the e-return system, they must submit a written explanation to their respective tax commissioner by October 31. Upon approval, they will be allowed to submit paper-based returns.
