The death toll from the earthquake that struck Myanmar has risen to 3,354, with an additional 4,508 people injured. Moreover, 220 individuals remain missing. The United Nations humanitarian agency has renewed its call to the global community for assistance to the country. In the aftermath of the earthquake, rescue teams have been deployed to Myanmar by China, Russia, India, and Bangladesh. Typically, the United States leads global efforts in disaster response and humanitarian aid. However, following the cessation of operations by the Trump-led U.S. aid agency, USAID, Washington has pledged $9 million in support to Myanmar. Despite this, the U.S. made it clear that the notion of always leading disaster recovery efforts worldwide is unrealistic.
