A report published by Amar Desh on July 30, 2026 recounts how quota reform protests in Chattogram during July and August 2024 developed into a student-public mass uprising. Students from Chittagong University, Chittagong College and other institutions joined the programmes, followed by workers, parents, professionals, businesspeople and activists from political parties. The report says the movement culminated on August 5, when news spread that then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina had resigned and left the country.

According to the report, police operations, attacks and gunfire in Muradpur on July 16 left three people dead and more than 100 injured. Chittagong University student Hriday Chandra Tarua, injured in clashes on July 18, later died while receiving treatment. A curfew was imposed from July 19, mobile internet was shut down, and the army and Border Guard Bangladesh were deployed, but small marches and organisational activities continued.

Large marches and rallies in early August included a one-point demand for the government’s resignation. Preliminary draft data from the Health Ministry and local district administration put the death toll in Chattogram division at 43, with more than 1,738 people injured.
