A sand-laden truck fell into a canal after an iron bridge collapsed in Lalmohan upazila of Bhola on Tuesday, killing the driver, Md. Naim, aged 25. The accident occurred around 12:40 p.m. on the bridge over Betua Canal at the eastern end of Azhar Road in Ramaganj Union. The truck’s helper, Al Amin, aged 12, was seriously injured and later referred for advanced treatment after receiving initial care at Lalmohan Upazila Health Complex.
Witnesses said the bridge collapsed as the truck was crossing from west to east, causing a loud noise before the vehicle plunged into the water. Locals rescued both victims and sent them to the hospital, where doctors declared Naim dead. The bridge is located near the ancestral home of the Speaker of the National Parliament, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikrom.
Local residents reported that the bridge had been in a risky condition for a long time and that authorities had been informed multiple times without effective action. Police have sent a team to the site, and legal procedures are underway.
