Engineer Ashikuzzaman Tamim, who sustained severe burns in a fishing trawler fire on the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram, has died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka. His death, which occurred late Saturday night, raised the total number of fatalities from the incident to three. Tamim, a resident of Sandwip upazila in Chattogram, was buried at his village home on Sunday afternoon.

Earlier, on June 30, two other crew members—engine room greasers Md. Rubel, 32, and Shah Alam, 40—died while being taken to the same hospital in Dhaka. The fire broke out on June 30 at noon when an explosion occurred in the engine room of the anchored trawler named FV Desh at the Sadarghat area of the Karnaphuli River. According to the trawler’s captain, Zubair Mahmud, the explosion caused the fire to spread rapidly, leading to casualties.

Three other sailors from another trawler, FV Disney, who were also burned in the incident, have since recovered and been discharged from Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
