Retired Major Mozzaffar Hossain, a fugitive accused in the assassination case of former President Ziaur Rahman, will be tried at the International Crimes Tribunal. The prosecution has filed a petition to present him before the tribunal, confirmed Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam on Tuesday afternoon. Investigators reportedly found evidence of his communication with another arrested accused, retired Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated that Mozzaffar’s trial would also be ensured under military law through a General Court Martial. He said Mozzaffar’s associates had already been tried in military courts and that the former officer had been living under a false identity in a neighboring country for many years. Based on intelligence information, he was arrested and handed over to the army for trial under military law.

Mozzaffar had been on the run for 45 years before being arrested on July 15 from a residence in Dhaka’s Banani area and transferred to military police custody the following day.
