Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson for the Sammilita Sanatan Jagaran Jote and head of Pundarik Dham, has been granted bail in two criminal cases. A High Court division bench on Sunday afternoon declared its earlier rules on the bail questions to be absolute. Lawyers said he will not be released for now because other cases against him remain pending.

The two cases concern allegations of attempted murder, vandalism and assault, and obstruction of government work. The High Court had issued rules in September last year. Das’s lawyer, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjya, told reporters that Das faces six criminal cases in total. The trial in the lawyer murder case in Chattogram is continuing before a tribunal, while his bail in a sedition case has been stayed.

Of the remaining four cases, the High Court’s ruling has secured bail for Das in two. Hearings on rules concerning bail in the other two cases are scheduled for August 16. In a sedition case involving allegations of disrespect to the national flag, lawyer Saiful Islam was killed during clashes at a Chattogram court on November 26, 2024, surrounding Das’s bail.
