Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, has reappointed Professor Md. Sayedur Rahman as Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with the rank of a state minister. The Cabinet Division issued the appointment notification on Thursday, January 1, 2026, just one day after Rahman’s resignation had been accepted on December 30.

Professor Rahman, a former vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University, explained that his resignation was part of a formal retirement process as his service tenure had ended. Speaking to BBC Bangla, he clarified that he would continue in the same position and responsibilities following his reappointment. Earlier, he had posted on social media that his resignation was submitted for retirement purposes.

In November of the previous year, Chief Adviser Yunus had appointed three special assistants with state minister status to support advisers in the health, home, and education ministries. Among them, the special assistants for the home and education ministries have already resigned, leaving Rahman as the only one reinstated to his previous role.
