India’s Border Security Force (BSF) was accused of pushing five people into Bangladesh through the Benipur border in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga on Wednesday morning, according to local reports. The five were detained by local residents after reaching Jibannagar town and were later handed over to police.

Jibannagar police station officer-in-charge Solaiman Sheikh said the detainees had been taken to the station. Police will verify their identities, citizenship and how they crossed the border into Bangladesh before taking legal action. The detainees were named as Abdus Shukur Khan, Sharmin Akter Rumi, Hamida, Nayan and Niyan; Niyan is reported to be an Indian citizen.

Local sources also alleged that two people, Hasibul and Asmaul, from the Benipur border area assist people in crossing the border, though this allegation could not be immediately verified. Lieutenant Colonel Rafiqul Alam, director and commander of Border Guard Bangladesh’s 58th battalion, said he had no information about the incident and was looking into the matter.
