A tourist from Khulna, Shouvik Roy, died after a parasailing rope snapped at Darianagar on Cox’s Bazar’s Marine Drive on Saturday afternoon, August 1. The accident occurred at a parasailing operation run by Farid Ahmed. Roy was visiting Cox’s Bazar with a nine-member tourist group and was staying at the Ocean View Paradise Hotel in Kolatoli.

Cox’s Bazar district administration beach worker Mahbub Alam said Roy was thrown into the sea when the rope broke during parasailing. He was rescued and taken to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead. Executive Magistrate Md Mahmudur Rahman Sayem said parasailing had been ordered closed since Monday because of adverse weather.

Sayem said other operators had complied with the order, but the establishment involved continued operating in defiance of the administration’s directive. He said legal action would be taken and the incident would be investigated. The victim’s family members were being brought quickly to Cox’s Bazar by air. Local sources alleged that at least 10 tourists had been injured in accidents at the operation over the past two years.
