Police in Barishal recovered the partially decomposed hanging body of a Barishal University student named Utshash Karmakar on Tuesday night, July 21, 2026. The body was found in a ground-floor mess room of a three-storey building near the university’s Khalpar brick kiln area. Officers said the room was locked from inside, and locals alerted police after detecting a strong odor. The body was recovered around 11:30 p.m.

Utshash Karmakar was a student of the Department of Geology and Mining from the 2018–19 academic session and hailed from Khulna district. The university’s proctorial team, along with faculty members and students, visited the scene after being informed. Assistant Proctor Dr. Gazi Md. Sakhawat Hossain confirmed the incident and said the body was being sent for autopsy.

According to Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam of Barishal Bandar Police Station, the condition of the body suggested death occurred two to three days earlier. The body was sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. Police suspect suicide but said the cause of death will be confirmed after investigation and autopsy reports.
