The burial of Khalequzzaman Anik, a 26-year-old student from Kushtia who died under unclear circumstances in Russia, has been completed. His funeral prayer was held after Zuhr on Sunday at a field beside Sowratola Jame Mosque in Ailchara ইউনিয়ন of Kushtia Sadar upazila, and he was buried at the adjacent graveyard. His body arrived in Bangladesh on Sunday afternoon, one month and 12 days after his death, before being taken to his home village of Sowratola.

Relatives and local residents gathered in grief when Anik’s body reached the village, with hundreds coming to see him for the last time. Anik was the son of farmer Manowar Biswas of Sowratola village. He had enrolled at South Ural State University in Chelyabinsk, Russia, on a scholarship about two and a half years earlier. Local representatives, political figures, religious scholars and people from different walks of life attended the funeral.

Family members said Anik died after falling from the roof of a five-storey campus building on June 20, while they received news of his death on June 21. His uncle said no clear information has yet emerged about how the incident occurred. MP Mufti Amir Hamza said the body was brought home for about Tk 800,000 after an initial demand of Tk 2.5 million, with assistance from the Russian embassy and relevant authorities.
