At least six people were killed in a stampede during a military recruitment exercise in Accra, Ghana’s capital, on Wednesday. According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the incident occurred when a large crowd of job seekers broke through security barriers and attempted to enter the stadium before the scheduled time. Several others were injured and taken to a military hospital for treatment. The recruitment drive had drawn thousands of young applicants, reflecting the country’s severe youth unemployment crisis. Ghana has been struggling with economic challenges since the COVID-19 pandemic, including high inflation that peaked at 50 percent in 2022 before easing to around 8 percent following IMF-backed reforms. Official data show that nearly 39 percent of Ghana’s youth remain unemployed, intensifying competition for limited job opportunities.
