Trade Advisor Sheikh Bashir Uddin has announced that Bangladesh will disclose a confidential agreement with the United States, originally signed during the Trump administration to counter trade tariffs. He emphasized that the non-disclosure agreement contains nothing against national interests. “Any potentially unfavorable clauses were addressed during negotiations. If the deal threatens our economic capacity or macroeconomic stability, it will not be enforced,” Uddin said. He also mentioned that while the US invoked national security as a basis for the deal, discussions remained confidential by mutual agreement. Regarding food security, Uddin noted that Bangladesh imports $15–20 billion worth of food annually and importing from the US at competitive prices could help stabilize the domestic market. Plans are underway to reduce the trade deficit through energy and agricultural imports from the US.
