The United States administration has stepped in to assist the mother of Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha after she was unable to attend her son’s historic World Cup debut against Spain due to visa and financial barriers. The match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 tournament, with Vozinha’s performance earning global attention. His emotional revelation that his mother could not be present because of strict US visa rules and a high security deposit prompted a response from the US State Department.

According to a CNN report cited in the source, a State Department representative confirmed that they had contacted Vozinha’s family and promised full diplomatic support for the visa process. The department clarified that the large deposit requirement, introduced during the Trump administration for citizens of about 50 countries including Cape Verde, would not apply to close relatives of World Cup players. However, officials noted that no visa application from Vozinha’s mother had yet been recorded, as she currently lacks a valid passport and is in the process of obtaining one.

The US government’s intervention has raised hopes that once the passport issue is resolved, Vozinha’s mother may soon join the stands to witness her son’s achievements firsthand.
