On March 30, 1981, then-President Ronald Reagan was shot outside the same hotel by John Hinckley Jr. after addressing about 5,000 AFL-CIO members. A bullet ricocheted off a limousine, injuring Reagan under his left arm and damaging his lung. Press Secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy, and police officer Thomas Delahanty were also wounded.
