Prime Minister’s Information Adviser Dr. Zahedur Rahman announced that the activities of the Awami League are currently banned under an executive order and that the party will face trial in a tribunal for alleged genocide and crimes against humanity. He stated that the court will decide, after the trial, whether the Awami League can continue to exist as a political party in the country. The remarks were made on Tuesday at a press conference held at the Department of Information in the Secretariat.

Dr. Rahman clarified that the Awami League itself has not been banned, but its activities are suspended pending investigation. He urged patience, noting that the Home Minister and the ICT division have confirmed that investigations are ongoing. He emphasized that the final decision rests with the court, which will hear all parties before issuing a verdict.

The adviser’s comments indicate that the government is awaiting judicial proceedings before determining the future legal and political status of the Awami League.
