A body buried under mistaken identity was exhumed in Madhupur, Tangail, 20 months after burial. The deceased was identified as Mejbabul Islam, 30, son of Hafizur Rahman from Dakshin Hatibandha village in Sundarganj, Gaibandha. The exhumation took place on Wednesday in the presence of an executive magistrate, and the remains were handed over to the rightful family.

According to the report, police recovered a throat-slit body on July 31, 2024, from a garden beside the Nabinagar-Chandra highway in Ashulia, Dhaka. A local resident, Hayrat Ali, mistakenly identified it as his son Ridoy and buried it in Madhupur. However, Ridoy returned alive on August 7 of the same year, leading to confusion. Later, Hafizur Rahman recognized the body from photographs as his missing son Mejbabul Islam.

Following a petition from the family, the court ordered the exhumation and handover of the body. Officials including Madhupur Assistant Commissioner (Land) Naeem Uddin and Tangail PBI Inspector Md. Shafiul Alam were present during the process.
