Serious allegations of irregularities and corruption have surfaced in a canal excavation project in Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh. Locals claim that instead of employing laborers, contractors used excavator machines for the work, violating project guidelines. They also alleged that the project committee’s president and general secretary took advance signatures from workers on blank bank checks. A written complaint has been submitted to the district administration demanding an investigation.
The project, under the Employment Generation Program for the Poorest (EGPP), is being implemented at a cost of over 25.7 million taka to re-excavate the Dabor Dasta–Malongi canal and build related infrastructure. Official records show 595 workers were supposed to be employed, but only a few were seen supervising the work. Locals reported that most excavation has been done by machines over the past month and a half, raising doubts about the depth and quality of the work.
District officials stated that the project is under regular monitoring and that any proven irregularities will be investigated and addressed accordingly.
