Alif Chowdhury, an 18-year-old higher secondary student and Jatiya Chhatra Shakti worker, suffered severe eye injuries in an attack during the National Citizen Party's July march in Habiganj last Tuesday. After initial treatment locally, he was transferred to the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital in Dhaka for surgery. Doctors said vision is not expected to return in his left eye.
Doctors said an injury from a brick or stone ruptured Alif's left eyeball and eyelid, with important internal parts of the eye displaced. The retina and other key internal structures were completely damaged, while a CT scan found blood clotting inside the eye. Surgery was conducted following a decision by a five-member medical board; doctors said temporary blurred vision in his right eye may improve.
Sarjis Alam of Chhatra Shakti identified Nazmul Hasan Oni, member secretary of Habiganj Sadar Upazila Chhatra Dal, as the alleged attacker. The report said a case had been filed but no one had been arrested by Friday. Alif's brother said NCP is covering treatment costs. NCP's Nahid Islam and Jamaat chief Dr Shafiqur Rahman condemned the attack and called for action against those involved.
