Fiscal Year 2023–24: Change in Accounting Method Increases Government Debt by Tk 56,000 Crore
The government's official debt figure rose by Tk 56,000 crore in the 2023–24 fiscal year due to a change in accounting methods. Previously, advance financing from the Bangladesh Bank — taken by the government to meet immediate financial needs — was not shown as part of internal borrowing. As a result, the actual scale of government debt was underreported. However, the Finance Division has now revised the accounting procedure to include these advances as part of total government debt.
