Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity committed during a violent crackdown following a military uprising 15 months ago. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam stated that the verdict was not an act of political revenge but a reflection of the nation’s commitment to justice and accountability. He emphasized that no one, regardless of power or position, stands above the law. The tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumdar, also sentenced former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death, while former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun received a five-year prison term after turning state witness. Tajul highlighted that the trial adhered to international standards and that the evidence presented would meet global judicial benchmarks. Hasina, who ruled Bangladesh for over 15 years, is currently in India after being ousted in the coup.
