Law enforcement agencies detained two young men after four members of a family, including retired schoolteacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, were found dead at their home in Rangpur. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Mabud said at a Sunday afternoon briefing that the two detainees were held early Sunday. The victims were Ganapati, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50, daughter Agomoni Chakraborty Prarthi, 25, and son Ayush Chakraborty Priyom, 12.
The detainees were identified as Mugdha Das, 23, and Siddhartha Das, 19, both from the city’s Machhuapara area. Police said their preliminary questioning indicated they had been using drugs and socialising on the roof of Ganapati’s under-construction house late on 20 August. According to the commissioner, they killed Ganapati after he saw them, then killed the other family members as they came out or recognised them.
Police recovered the bodies on Saturday night after relatives and local residents became suspicious of the locked house and a smell from inside. Officers found household items scattered and said gold ornaments and other belongings were taken. Investigators are examining whether anyone else was involved or whether there was another motive.
