A court in Bhola sent former Char Fasson upazila BNP general secretary Motahar Hossain Alamgir Malatia to jail in a case filed by Youth League worker Md Salam. On July 29, Alamgir Malatia appeared before the Bhola District and Sessions Judge Court and sought bail, but the judge rejected the application and ordered his detention.
The case also names his two sons, Md Arafat Hossain Malatia and Fahad Hossain Malatia, as accused. According to the complaint, the accused demanded Tk 300,000 from Salam, locked his home and assaulted him after he did not pay. Salam has long lived on ancestral land in the area and runs a Thai glass business, the case record says.
Salam said he was not allowed to receive treatment at a local hospital or file a case at a police station, after which he went to court. The report says the accused had been on six weeks’ bail granted by the High Court. Fahad Hossain Malatia denied the allegations, saying there is a court case over disputed land and alleging that a political opponent used the Youth League worker to file a false extortion case against his father.
