Seventeen law officers, including Additional Public Prosecutors, Additional Government Pleaders, and Assistant Public Prosecutors, resigned simultaneously from the Sylhet District and Sessions Judge Court. The resignations were submitted on Wednesday afternoon to the Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Abdullah Al Mamun for forwarding to the Secretary of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. The officers, reportedly aligned with Jamaat, cited dissatisfaction with the government’s reluctance to implement the referendum, July Charter, and constitutional reforms.
According to the Sylhet unit of the Bangladesh Lawyers Council, the officials resigned voluntarily in protest against the government’s cancellation of the independent secretariat for the judiciary and its perceived unwillingness to carry out promised reforms. Among those who resigned are Advocate Md. Alim Uddin, Additional Public Prosecutor, and Advocate Mohammad Nazmul Huda, Additional Government Pleader, along with fifteen Assistant Public Prosecutors.
In their resignation letters, the officers stated that despite serving with dedication, they were stepping down in protest against recent government decisions while pledging to continue contributing responsibly to the country’s legal and judicial system as lawyers.
