China has removed 19 officials from its list of lawmakers ahead of the country’s most important annual political meeting scheduled for next week. The announcement was made by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the nation’s top legislative body. Among those removed are nine military officers, including Li Qiaoming, commander of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Ground Force, and former navy commander Shen Jinlong. Several provincial officials, including former Inner Mongolia party chief Sun Shaochong, were also excluded.

State media did not specify reasons for the removals. However, the move follows the recent dismissal of top general Zhang Youxia for “serious violations of discipline and law,” a phrase often associated with corruption cases. Since taking power in 2013, President Xi Jinping has intensified anti-corruption efforts, describing corruption as a major threat to the Communist Party.

The decision comes just before the “Two Sessions,” to be held in Beijing from March 4 to 11, where the government will outline policy priorities and economic targets for the year.
