Mohammad Selim Uddin, Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dhaka North unit and a mayoral candidate for DNCC, expressed deep concern and anger over the death of a teacher during a mugging near the National Parliament building in the capital. In a protest statement on Saturday, he questioned how muggers could operate near such an important and heavily secured state area.

Selim Uddin said the incident had raised a natural question about where ordinary people could be safe if citizens’ lives and property could not be protected around major state installations. He described the unchecked activities of muggers in busy and important parts of the capital as a matter of deep concern for public safety.

He said ensuring the security of citizens’ lives and property is among the state’s principal responsibilities. He called for effective and strict measures against extortion, mugging, theft, robbery and terrorist activities, and urged law-enforcement agencies to be more active in maintaining normal law and order in Dhaka and across the country. He also sought forgiveness for the deceased teacher and demanded the swift arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved.
