In the remote char areas of the Brahmaputra River in Gaibandha’s Fulchhari Upazila, residents face severe deprivation due to lack of healthcare, secondary education, and basic infrastructure. With no hospitals, paved roads, or nearby schools, locals rely on boats and natural resilience to survive. Many children drop out of school due to long, difficult commutes. Medical emergencies often turn fatal, especially during monsoon. Despite repeated proposals, development remains stalled. Local leaders urge urgent government attention to secure basic rights for these vulnerable communities.

People of Brahmaputra's Char Areas Deprived of Healthcare and Secondary Education

The Brahmaputra River flows through the Fulchhari Upazila of Gaibandha, where several villages—like Kabilpur, Kalasonar Char, and Khatiyamari—are situated along its banks. River erosion and isolation define life here. During the monsoon, the river swells, swallowing homes and croplands. In the dry season, it becomes a wall that cuts these communities off from the outside world. On the other side of the river lie schools, hospitals, and markets—while on this side, only uncertainty remains. Poor connectivity and a lack of secondary education and healthcare services are everyday realities.
