Chattogram district police arrested four people accused of running a fraud scheme that produced forged police clearance certificates for citizens preparing to travel abroad. The arrests were announced on August 17 by the District Special Branch and District Detective Branch. The detainees were identified as Ashraf Ali Khan, Md. Nishan, Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun and Abdur Rahman.

Police said the group took Tk120,000 from one prospective overseas traveler after promising a quick and easy police clearance. Instead of applying through official procedures, members allegedly made a counterfeit certificate modeled on an authentic document and forged government officials’ signatures. They also created a fake website and QR code so that scans directed users to false clearance information rather than an official government website.

The document was detected when the traveler submitted it to a travel agency, which found inconsistencies during verification. The victim later filed a written complaint with the Chattogram superintendent of police, and a regular case was filed at Banshkhali police station. Police said other people may be involved and efforts are underway to identify them. Authorities urged citizens to avoid brokers and use the designated official process for police clearances.
