More than 500 people are feared dead following two boat sinkings off the coast of Myanmar in late June, according to a joint statement from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). The boats reportedly departed from Myanmar’s Rakhine State, carrying mostly Rohingya Muslims, including some who had left refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.
The UN statement said one vessel carrying about 250 passengers lost contact shortly after setting out to sea, while another boat with around 280 people is believed to have sunk near Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady coast on July 8. The incidents have not yet been officially confirmed, but the agencies expressed deep concern over the potential scale of the tragedy.
IOM and UNHCR emphasized their alarm at the possible heavy loss of life and the ongoing risks faced by Rohingya attempting dangerous sea journeys from Myanmar and Bangladesh.
