Bangladesh will close land ports that see minimal import-export activity and operate at a loss, said Shipping Adviser Brig Gen (Retd) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain during a visit to Hili port. Four of the country’s 24 land ports have already been shut, while only 12–14 of the remaining 20 are functional. Larger, active ports are being modernized, and some river ports will be handed to the private sector. The adviser also inspected facilities and discussed infrastructure improvements with customs officials and traders.
Land ports that have been built but see little to no import or export activity — and are operating at a loss — will be closed, said Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain, Adviser to the Ministry of Shipping.
