Inter Miami ended a five-match winless run with a record-margin 7-1 Major League Soccer victory over CF Montreal at Stade Saputo. Lionel Messi led the Florida club’s return to winning form, scoring four goals and providing an assist. The result was Miami’s first MLS win since July 25 and followed four defeats and one draw in their previous five matches.
Montreal began aggressively and saw several attempts strike the goalpost. Casemiro put Miami ahead with a powerful header from a corner in the 20th minute, before Fabian Herbers equalised in the 37th. Messi restored the lead two minutes later with a long-range strike, sending Miami into halftime 2-1 ahead. He added his second goal in the 51st minute, while Luis Suarez scored Miami’s fourth in the 79th.
Messi completed his hat-trick three minutes after Suarez’s goal. Alexander Shaw made it 6-1 in the 89th minute, and Messi scored from a free kick in the fifth minute of added time. The four-goal outing was the eighth of Messi’s career and his first for Miami. His 18 goals in 19 MLS matches place him top of the league scoring chart, two ahead of FC Dallas’ Peter Musa. New coach Cristian Kily Gonzalez will take charge once he receives a work permit.
