Advocate Faridul Alam, the third prosecution witness, testified as an eyewitness in the murder case of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif at the Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal on Thursday. Judge Fazle Khoda Mohammad Nazir recorded his statement, after which lawyers for present and absconding accused cross-examined him. The court rejected two separate petitions filed for accused Chinmoy Krishna Das: one seeking bail and another seeking time to cross-examine the third witness.
Chinmoy Krishna Das appeared before the tribunal virtually, while other accused were brought from prison under tight police security. The prosecution also produced another witness, but testimony could not be taken because of limited time, and a further date was set. ISKCON supporters were seen outside the court during the hearing.
Prosecution lawyer Md Rayhanul Wazed Chowdhury said repeated requests for time by the defence had delayed cross-examination of the first and second witnesses. The case stems from the killing of Alif during clashes near the Chattogram court building on November 26, 2024. Charges were filed against 39 people; 27 are jailed and 12 remain absconding.
