Nearly 400 pilgrims travelling toward Kailash Manasarovar in Tibet, China, have gone missing after flash floods inundated several Nepal-China border villages in Rasuwa district early Wednesday. Contact with the travellers has not been possible since communications were disrupted at Rasuwagadhi, a key border area.

Basu Kumar Adhikari, managing director of Kathmandu-based Touch Kailash Travels and Tours, said 390 pilgrims were scheduled to cross the border on Wednesday, including 93 Nepali citizens. He said that, apart from a few people, contact could not be established with most pilgrims until 3pm.

The pilgrims were travelling through several agencies, including Trekkers Society, Samrat Tours and Travels, Himalayan Glacier and Leaf Holidays. Sagar Pandey, president of the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal, said efforts were under way to contact the pilgrims and gather information on their condition. The floods damaged settlements and important infrastructure in the Rasuwagadhi area, while traffic on a major border road linking Nepal with Tibet was disrupted.
