Nearly 1,000 Killed in Intense Sectarian Clashes in Sweida, Syrian Government Fails to Enforce Ceasefire
Violence once again erupted on Saturday in the Druze-majority southern Syrian city of Sweida. Although a ceasefire had been declared following a week of clashes, the city was shaken by the sound of machine gunfire and mortar shell explosions, further escalating tensions. The UK-based monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that at least 940 people have been killed in fighting around Sweida over the past week, according to Reuters.
