Five members of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Daksu) walked out of the university’s Senate session on Monday night after the Vice-Chancellor announced that the proposal to rename five facilities named after members of the Sheikh family would be sent back to the Syndicate for further review. The walkout occurred around 10:15 p.m., despite the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam, urging the student representatives not to leave.

The issue of renaming Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, Sheikh Russel Tower, Bangabandhu Tower, and the Sultana Kamal Hostel of the Institute of Leather Engineering and Technology was first raised in the Syndicate meeting on January 8. During the Senate session, some members called for procedural adherence, while others opposed the renaming. Daksu representatives argued that the current names caused difficulties for students, including harassment during public events and challenges in obtaining sponsorships.

Senate member Fazlul Haque Milon proposed renaming Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall after national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. The Vice-Chancellor concluded by directing that the matter be reconsidered by the Syndicate.
