Tapu Raihan, son of renowned filmmaker Zahir Raihan, contested the 13th National Parliamentary Election from Dhaka-17 constituency but received only 1,041 votes, according to unofficial results released on Thursday, February 12, 2026. His main rivals in the race were BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, who secured 72,699 votes, and Jamaat candidate Dr. Khaliduzzaman, who received 68,300 votes.
Tapu Raihan had announced his candidacy on November 9 of the previous year at a press conference held at the National Press Club’s Abdus Salam Hall. In his election manifesto, he pledged to transform Dhaka-17 into a model area by eliminating corruption and terrorism, ensuring education for all, providing training and business opportunities for the unemployed, protecting the rights of the elderly and women, and promoting social security and green urban development.
The Dhaka-17 constituency includes Gulshan, Banani, Niketan, Mohakhali, Karail slum, Baridhara, Shahjadpur, Kalachandpur, Bhashantek, Matikata, and part of the Dhaka Cantonment area.
