Iran has reached an agreement with Oman on shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Saturday. He said the agreement followed several weeks of technical talks over routes for vessel traffic through the strategically important waterway.
Baghaei said Iran and Oman, the two coastal countries bordering the strait, signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 to determine safe maritime navigation routes. He said intensive discussions had continued for three months and claimed that positive progress was made during the past three weeks despite what he described as US obstacles.
The plan was prepared under coordination by Iran's Foreign Ministry, with participation from Iranian defense, security and environmental authorities, Baghaei said. He added that some issues remain under discussion between Tehran and Muscat, including a joint statement to be issued by the two sides. Talks and exchanges will continue until the process is finalized. Iran described the arrangement as an independent initiative by the two coastal states aimed at ensuring safe vessel movement and preserving both countries' sovereignty.
